The time timer is a teaching aid that helps children to understand time. It is important for children in a class or group room to develop a feeling for the speed at which time passes so that they can make good use of the time available. The basic idea is to visually represent the passing of certain periods of time more clearly than on a conventional household clock. The bright red color field shows the available time span at a glance without having to keep an eye on the clock all the time. It is not necessary to be able to read the correct time. The ability to feel time, to sense how long a period of time lasts, is an important prerequisite for learning how to deal with time.
Most activities in preschool and elementary school take place within 60-minute intervals. The 1-hour format of the time timer is therefore advantageous. The time timer is started at the beginning of an hour, so the children have constant control over the elapsing time and can see how much of the hour they have left.
